Chapter History

In January 1986, Barbara L. Sellers contacted Mid-Atlantic Regional Director, Barbara W. Davis, for the steps necessary to charter a graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated ® in Burlington, North Carolina.  Members
Barbara Sellars, Pearl C. Lee, Helen B. Banks, Mary L. Shanks, and Elaine W. Thompson were all active in the Beta Iota Omega Chapter in nearby Greensboro, North Carolina. These members identified fifteen inactive members in the Burlington/Alamance County who were interested in the chartering a chapter. These seventeen graduate members established The Precious Pearls interest group. These sorors worked diligently for approximately ten months on service projects and planning for the new graduate chapter.  Pi Omicron Omega Chapter was chartered on December 7, 1986, becoming the 79th chapter of the Mid-Atlantic Region. Pi Omicron Omega is also the proud sponsoring chapter for Omicron Epsilon Chapter located on the campus of Elon University, Elon, North Carolina. Omicron Epsilon was chartered on May 9, 1987. Pi Omicron Omega currently has fifty-two members. There are fourteen Silver Star, four Golden Sorors and Seven Life Members. For the past 32 years, Pi Omicron Omega has been serving the citizens of Alamance County.
