In January 1986, Barbara L. Sellers contacted Mid-Atlantic Regional Director, Barbara W. Davis, for the steps necessary to charter a graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated ® in Burlington, North Carolina.  Members
Barbara Sellars, Pearl C. Lee, Helen B. Banks, Mary L. Shanks, and Elaine W. Thompson were all active in the Beta Iota Omega Chapter in nearby Greensboro, North Carolina. These members identified fifteen inactive members in the Burlington/Alamance County who were interested in the chartering a chapter. These seventeen graduate members established The Precious Pearls interest group.

After approximately ten months of service projects and planning
Pi Omicron Omega Chapter was chartered on December 7, 1986.
